In brief: Ebay plans to re-enter India despite new ecommerce FDI policy
US online marketplace Ebay plans to re-enter India despite uncertainty over the country’s new ecommerce foreign direct investment (FDI) guidelines.
In December, India tightened norms for FDI-funded ecommerce companies such as Flipkart and Amazon. The government said such entities can’t exercise ownership or control over inventory, and must provide services such as warehousing, logistics, and advertising to all sellers. Ecommerce companies are also barred from entering into pacts for the exclusive sale of products and from holding equity stakes in their sellers.
The new rules caused widespread disruption for Amazon today as products like its range of Echo speakers, Presto-branded home cleaning goods, and other Amazon Basics products disappeared from its inventory in India.
