China’s CSDN Hacking Case Solved, Suspect in Custody

Last year, a series of high-profile website data leaks shocked the Chinese internet and released millions of usernames and passwords onto the internet. One of the worst hit was IT portal and community CSDN, which lost data for over six million users. Now, Beijing police are reporting that after a monthlong investigation they have a suspect in custody.

In fact, they’ve had the suspect, surnamed Zeng, in custody since February 4, apparently. He has since admitted to hacking CSDN, and interestingly has also admitted to hacking into an online payment system and and a stock market system of some kind, although the police have not released specifics. In the process of investigating the CSDN hack, the police also came across four other websites hacked by other hackers, who are now also in police custody.

According to the Beijing News, CSDN has also received an infringement notice from the police for its lax security measures, which helped facilitate the hacking and data theft. It was not immediately clear whether this notice would be accompanied by a fine or whether it’s better understood as a stern warning.
