This new compact camera wants to make selfie-loving ladies feel like runway models

The anything-but-humble selfie is a pop culture staple of the mid-2010s, and nowhere is the phenomenon more prevalent than in Asia. The region has given us “selfie sticks,” selfie apps, and even a selfie-centric smartphone. Now, Japanese electronics manufacturer Casio has unveiled a powerful point-and-shoot camera designed for women who are obsessed with photographing themselves.

In keeping with the company’s Exilim TR line of self portrait-focused cameras, the brand new EX-TR50 features a unique design language with a frame that doubles as a kickstand and a three-inch LCD that can swivel around it and the lens. This allows for a multitude of shooting angles but also makes the camera reminiscent of a fancy makeup case. With an almost Burberry-inspired plaid pattern on the back of the LCD, it would certainly look right at home in a designer handbag.

To make taking selfies easier, the camera offers three shutter release options: press a physical button on the frame, tap the LCD screen, or wave your hand while facing the lens.

Beneath its fashionable exterior, the EX-TR50 features a 1/1.7-inch CMOS sensor – larger than the standard 1/2.3-inch sensors commonly found in compact cameras. It allows the device to capture a sharper, more detailed image, especially in low light conditions. Casio also boosted its 11.1-megapixel image resolution by fitting the EX-TR50 with a specially-designed F2.8 / f=4.58mm molded glass lens. The whole package contains five lenses in five groups, including one aspherical lens.

On the software side, Casio developed a “Make-up Plus” mode that promises to increase image clarity and provide users with on-the-fly selfie touch-ups and enhancements.

“Make-up Plus offers improved functions for enhancing skin quality and tone, and takes advantage of the camera’s high resolution to capture images so detailed that every eyelash and hair of the subject can be seen,” the company said in a statement. “Users can also select different settings for both skin tone and smoothness according to their personal preferences. Moreover, Casio’s Make-up Bracketing function stores three images to give the user additional variations of the skin tone setting.”

In addition to Make-up Plus mode, the EX-TR50 has two other new functions: Promotion Movie and Posing Shot. Promotion Movie allows a user to create a high-definition video by adding visual effects and a soundtrack to a group of still photos. Posing Shot takes five successive photos while voice guidance prompts the user to change poses “like a fashion model.”
