Capital A sees major YoY gains in passengers, super app users as travel returns
Malaysia’s Capital A is seeing the effects of the returning demand for travel, seeing a 633% year-on-year jump in passengers carried in the second quarter of 2022 with a load factor of 84% – similar to its pre-pandemic numbers.

Previously named AirAsia Group, Capital A said its consolidated airlines business – which includes its operations in Malaysia, Indonesia, and the Philippines – carried around 5.6 million passengers from April to June this year.
With people’s interest in travel rekindled, the company said the Airasia Super App saw record highs in the growth of average monthly active users. It hit 10.6 million in the second quarter of the year, climbing 236% compared to the previous year. The number of transactions through the platform also saw gains in the reported quarter, registering a 524% year-on-year growth to hit 4.9 million.
Additionally, the company saw a rise in ecommerce deliveries done through its logistics service, Teleport, with a 630% year-over-year increase to land at almost 1.2 million in the quarter.

The firm’s boost in passengers mostly came from its home country of Malaysia, seeing a massive 1,276% year-on-year leap in travelers to hit almost 3.9 million. Its Indonesia operations saw around 715,000 passengers, and its Philippines arm flew almost 1 million people, logging year-over-year jumps of 132% and 480%, respectively.
In Thailand – which was not included in its consolidated airline numbers – the firm carried over 1.7 million passengers, representing a 133% rise.
