In brief: TikTok fined $5.7m by US regulators
- Popular short-video and social-media app TikTok has agreed to a US$5.7 million settlement with US Federal Trade Commission (FTC) over allegations that it illegally collected personal information from children.
- The agency said it is the largest civil penalty it has ever obtained in a children’s privacy case.
- To register for the app, users needed to provide an email address, phone number, first and last name, a short biography and a picture. The laws require websites and online services aimed at children under the age of 13 years to obtain parental consent before collecting personal information.
- Regulators allege that [TikTok] knew children were using the app but didn’t seek parental consent before collecting data from users.
