India-based edtech startup Toppr has laid off more than 300 employees, adding to the significant job cuts that have taken place in the local sector in recent months, Entrackr reported, citing people familiar with the matter.
The company, acquired by edtech major Byju’s last year, is firing over 300 people immediately and could let go of up to 500, according to three of the sources.
Tech in Asia has reached out to Toppr for comments on the matter, but the company has not immediately responded.
Layoffs at Toppr follow job cuts at another Byju’s-owned edtech platform, WhiteHat Jr. The company has slashed 300 full-time staff, mostly in its code-teaching and sales teams.
Other India-based edtech firms have also been issuing pink slips, including FrontRow and Udayy, with the latter shutting down operations.
Founded in 2013, Toppr’s online app provides learning courses and tutoring for entrance exams. Byju’s acquired the after-school learning platform in July last year for US$150 million.
