Byju’s acquires another Indian test preparation firm

Indian edtech titan Byju’s has acquired online exam preparation platform Gradeup for an undisclosed amount.

Byju Raveendran, the founder & CEO of Byju’s.

Founded in 2o15, India-based Gradeup offers comprehensive courses through live classes. The courses available on its platform include study materials, practice tests, and assessment services administered by top faculty members.

After the acquisition, Gradeup will be rebranded as Byju’s Exam Prep, catering to students who are looking to take exams in over 25 categories – from entrance exams such as the Common Admission Test and Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering, as well as assessments for government jobs.

With the acquisition, Byju’s grows its suite of offerings, which it provides to its over 100 million registered students and 6.5 million paid subscribers. The move also follows Byju’s recent acquisition of another test preparation company Aakash Educational Services, a Blackstone Group-backed engineering exam coaching firm, in a deal reportedly valued at nearly US$1 billion.

“Together with Byju’s, we will accelerate our growth and expand our reach across the country,” said Shobhit Bhatnagar, the CEO of Gradeup. “Further, we will leverage their strengths in content to deepen our current product offering and broaden our coverage of exams.”

In addition to Gradeup and Aakash Educational Services, Byju’s also recently spent a total of US$750 million for its acquisitions of Singapore-based Great Learning and India’s Toppr.
