Indonesian digital comic publisher Ngomik.com has recently launched a new feature which enables customers to buy content using their mobile phone credit. With this new system artists can sell their work easily on Ngomik and customers can conveniently purchase comics from the site. Sounds like a breeze.
To buy premium comics from Ngomik, users can simply register their mobile phone numbers on the site. After verification through text messages, users will receive a code that allows them to purchase content via their mobile phones. The price for each premium comic is pretty affordable: Only around IDR5,000 to 10,000 (US$0.60 to $1.20). Currently the phone credit feature can only be used by members who are Telkomsel subscribers, but other mobile operators will have this feature soon.
Since last year, Ngomik has become a place for Indonesian comic artists to share their works without having to go through complicated procedure. Everyone can join as member, and publish or download comics for free. Alternatively users can also sell their work as premium comics, through a revenue share system.
Wisnu Manupraba, CEO of Ngomik explained to Penn-Olson:
Not just comics, other artworks such as wallpaper, illustration, caricatures, etc. will also be available as premium content on Ngomik. So the artists could channel their talent and benefit from their works. We want to encourage comic lovers to develop their skills and we’re aiming to be a leader in Indonesian digital comic publishing.
Starting from a national competition for start-ups, Indigo Fellowship in 2010, Ngomik has managed to emerge as one of the successful start-ups in Indonesia, with more than 2,000 comics and over 5,500 members. It is now developing a mobile version for premium comics, and is going to reach more customers through cooperation with other publishers and partners.
