The Games in Asia team is a multicultural one, and we realized that there are a lot of cultural differences even within such a small team. So we’ve taken a short in-house survey of the gaming platforms we had access to while growing up. Here’s what we know so far based on our limited sample size.
Please note, this is not a conclusive study. We need your help to make it better! Survey link is at the end of the article.
As children
Asia predominantly enjoyed Nintendo’s Gameboy and the PC. Our colleague Xairylle, from the Philippines, had access to a variety of consoles, while Mary-Anne from Singapore had a Playstation 1. No prizes for guessing how we all got our console gaming fixes as a child. coughpiracycough
This was more or less on par with what our colleagues in Europe, Iain and Dominik, had access to. Charlie from America, on the other hand, only had access to the PC, an Apple II E, and occasionally, the SNES at friends’ houses.
As teenagers
In Singapore, gaming platform access shrank to just the PC and the Playstations 1 and 2. The same went for the Philippines. The US and Europe, however, were privy to the Nintendo 64 and the Xbox respectively, on top of their PC and Playstation access.
In Asia, the most popular game award amongst the three of our Asian writers unanimously went to Warcraft III Dota.
