Forget the AI bubble for a minute – it isn’t the only one around.
The global elite, along with so many voices from the AI industry, gathered this week at the World Economic Forum (WEF) in Davos, Switzerland. I found it interesting that BlackRock CEO Larry Fink, who opened the annual event, implied that Davos participants might be living in a bubble.
Fink even suggested that WEF meetings should be held in places like Buenos Aires and Jakarta – “where the modern world is actually built” – so “the mountain can come down to earth.”
This isn’t new. For years, the world’s most powerful people have been discussing global problems from an exclusive Alpine resort town, far removed from where real impact could be felt. And in an age where job loss, data centers, and AI governance are crucial debates, the disconnect feels sharper.
However, living in your own bubble isn’t just for the extremely wealthy. Ordinary folks do it too: We tend to talk to people who think like us, come from similar backgrounds, and share comparable values.
In AI industry terms, we’re training our views on the same limited datasets.

This year, I’m trying to get out of my own bubble by connecting to those outside the tech circle. I also want to talk to more people, not just to potential subjects or sources for a story. This mindset is also critical to get diverse perspectives, and it’s the only way we journalists can compete with AI in an increasingly volatile world.
