Hi there,

Grab COO Alex Hungate is probably the only employee of the tech company, apart from founder Anthony Tan, who has led a listed firm.

Apart from serving as president and CEO of SGX-listed food solutions and gateway services company SATS for eight years, Hungate was previously CEO of HSBC’s Singapore businesses.

He also served as a non-executive director of UOB, one of Singapore’s big three banks, for four and a half years.

Hungate’s experience in financial services is certainly useful as Grab aims to pivot to higher-margin services, which my colleague Putra explores in an exclusive interview with him.

Aside from being Grab’s COO, Hungate sits on the board of GXS Bank, Grab’s digital bank joint venture with Singtel.

His position at Grab extends way beyond fintech, however. With Tan taking on more of a “visionary role” these days, the former SATS chief will need to tap into all his executive leadership skills to ensure that the super app remains focused on what areas it should prioritize on a day-to-day basis.
