After more than a decade of console-less gaming, the official Chinese version of the Xbox One will finally launch next Tuesday (September 23). At $600, the thing is not exactly cheap, and there are already a lot of reasons not to buy one. But another one has just surfaced on the Chinese web: Chinese Xbox One games will have activation codes, meaning that selling used games won’t be possible.
Microsoft hasn’t made any official statement about this, but if you’d like to see the damning evidence for yourself, it comes in the form of this image from the back of an Xbox One game in China. The relevant section reads: “Please use the activation code inside to activate the disc. The code is one-time-use only and can only be used on Xbox One systems from the People’s Republic of China.”

It’s not clear yet if this disclaimer will be on the back of all Chinese Xbox One games, but it certainly suggests that a secondhand market for Xbox One games in China may not be possible. Since the console is already crazily expensive in the region, it seems like maybe Microsoft could have given Chinese gamers a break with this, but apparently it was not to be. Oh, well.
