Bertelsmann banks $500m to back Indian startups

Bertelsmann India Investments (BII) has raised over US$500 million and has announced an early-stage program that supports startups in their series A rounds.

BII is looking to make three to four investments per year by partnering with VCs and entrepreneurs. The firm will also invest in six to eight series A and mid-stage firms every year, up from the two to three investments it currently makes annually.

For the core mid-stage investing program, BII will lead rounds with ticket sizes of US$5 million to US$20 million initially and will later invest up to US$40 million in each firm.

The VC plans to invest in healthtech, fintech, agritech, Web3, deeptech, enterprise tech, and future-of-work startups. It has invested in 17 companies since it was established in 2012, lending a total of US$285 million to companies such as Eruditus, Shiprocket, Rupeek, and Lendingkart.

BII is the investment arm of German multinational media company Bertelsmann, which is the parent firm of Penguin Random House, BMG, and Arvato.

The Bertelsmann group plans to invest a total of US$5.3 billion to US$7.4 billion by 2025. Bertelsmann Investments has already financed 250 startups to the tune of US$1.06 billion in total.
