Apple makes a dent on Samsung’s home turf as Koreans love the new iPhones

Apple’s iPhones 6 have created an upset on Samsung’s home turf. As The Wall Street Journal reports, on October 24, three major Korean telcos opened pre-booking for the new iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus, and ultimately sold “tens of thousands” of units in a single day. That figure far exceeds the estimated 30,000 Galaxy Note 4 units Samsung sold last month.
SK Telecom, Korea’s largest telco, noted that the first and second batches of the new iPhones have been fully booked but did not reveal the exact numbers. KT Corp reported that 50,000 pre-orders for the new iPhone were booked within thirty minutes. LG Uplus Corp meanwhile, reported 20,000 bookings for the new iPhones in first 20 minutes.
This year, Apple has wisely aped Samsung’s famous large screens with the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus, pitting them directly against Samsung Galaxy Note 4 and Galaxy S5 devices.
iPhone preorders surged in China earlier this month, where consumers reportedly booked an estimated four million units. Meanwhile, Indians pre-booked over 25,000 units before the devices launch on October 17.
The new iPhones will hit the store shelves in Korea on October 31.
