What happened in the Asian technology scene last week? Here are five must-read stories and another 15 below to catch up and be ready for the week ahead.
(1) Facebook and China: Blake Chandlee, Facebook’s vice-president and commercial director for emerging markets said Facebook has no plans for China. We doubt that is true. Facebook probably doesn’t want to reveal any plans right now.
(2) Groupon China: The joint venture between Groupon and Tencent had a rough week. It started on a high when they launched gaopeng.com as its official domain. However, the domain was shut down shortly due to difference between the two Internet giants.
(3) Google India: The search engine released a study that reflected low online presence among Indian SMEs and also an increasing number of businesses learning how to use the Internet for business purposes. It is a long way to go for Google India, but expect high growth rate if things were done right.
(4) Mobile Commerce in Asia: In a survey conducted by Accenture, it was revealed that 69 percent of the Asian respondents prefer to use mobile phones for most payment. Is there a chance for us to explore?
(5) Blogs and Start-ups: There could potentially be a Silicon Valley in Asia. But publicity is missing and we believe blogs fill up that role for start-ups.
