Philippine media company Inquirer gets into eSports, partners with PESO to launch eSports website

Philippine eSports is setting its sights on going mainstream as the Philippine eSports Organization (PESO) has just announced a partnership with major Philippine media company Inquirer as it launches PESO’s new and improved website. This was announced on the second day of the first International eSports Federation (IeSF) Asian championships in Cebu City, Philippines where the top local teams competed with top teams from Mongolia, Malaysia, Korea, and Thailand.

Aside from being rehosted and redesigned, the new PESO website also has a new forum feature that aims to strengthen the local eSports community by providing an online platform for eSports enthusiasts all over the country. The new PESO website will also be more active in terms of producing articles to keep fans updated with the latest happenings in the Philippine eSports scene. This should be very helpful to the community, as it will help teams, sponsors, casters, organizations, and other major eSports personalities find each other for a more active industry.

Inquirer’s partnership with PESO is the first of its kind for the Philippines. You may recall, we’ve previously written about the Philippine media’s negative impression of gaming. According to Inquirer.net’s Chief Operating Officer Gary Libby, however, Inquirer “believe[s] in the mission of PESO, especially their aim to erase the bad image of computer gaming.” PESO’s Executive Director Irymark “Tryke” Gutierrez is very positive about this partnership and considers it as a major step in promoting eSports and responsible gaming in the Philippines.

However, Gutierrez also clarifies that while PESO hopes to someday be the organization to spearhead the regulation of Philippine eSports, its main aim is to first set an example to be recognized not only by other local eSports organizations, but also by the Philippine gamers themselves.
