Startup unicorns in Asia

This summer saw investors throw around a lot of money, including rounds approaching or beyond a billion dollars for the likes of Uber, Didi Kuaidi, Flipkart, and Coupang. All that money allowed the ecommerce startups to entrench their leadership in their respective markets, while the newer, scrappier startups in sectors like on-demand services used the cash to build up a war chest to battle fast-moving rivals.

After that summer of madness, hereโ€™s a look at Asiaโ€™s biggest startup unicorns in terms of how much theyโ€™ve raised and whatโ€™s their current valuations. Thereโ€™s also a global ranking so you can see how Asiaโ€™s finest fit into the worldwide tech market. The data is from CB Insightsโ€™ real-time unicorn tracker, with a couple of adjustments here and there for new valuations reported this month by credible media outlets.

Focusing on Asiaโ€™s top 20 startup unicorns, the data reveals โ€“ as detailed in the infographic below โ€“ that theyโ€™re worth a total of US$132 billion and have raised a publicly-disclosed grand sum of over US$18 billion. Gadget maker Xiaomi leads the way for Asia, standing at second place in the global ranking with a purported worth of US$46 billion, just behind Uberโ€™s mammoth US$51 billion valuation.
