Here’s what we covered on Asian technology last week:
Several Americans sued Baidu over censorship issues last week. Coincidentally, the U.S government also unveiled its strategy to fight censorship on the Internet. More development on China tech as Youku launched a new video search engine, soku.com. Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg would also be visiting China sometime this year. No agenda has been set so far, though. Beside 360buy.com, retail giant Walmart also invested in Yihaodian, a Chinese e-commerce site.
Hotels.com entered Indonesia simply by localizing a dedicated website for Indonesians. The appearance of a “Twitter Ghost in Indonesia” caused a huge viral effect which captures many Twitter users’ attention. One of the most controversial Indonesian tech news last week was about Multiply over-riding a blogger’s URL. We also took time to speak to the blogger to understand the situation better.
In India, Bollywood had its first movie, ‘Zindagi Milegi Na Dobara’, to employ mobile marketing. India’s new censorship rule also triggered protests from tech companies including search giant, Google. A web mashup between Twitter and Google Map also helped India identify where power cuts occurs across the country.
In Japan, Docomo rolls out nine new smartphones last week (Check out the awesome photos we took). PopCap also entered Japan through Taito and GREE. Start-up weekend Tokyo was great fun as several cool start-up ideas emerged. (more on this later).
