Argus Labs to boost blockchain gaming scalability with new offering

Blockchain-based games require a robust infrastructure that can handle the computational requirements of gaming transactions while providing a smooth gameplay and user experience.

However, traditional blockchain solutions face scalability issues, leading to slow transaction processing and increased costs, which hampers the development of gaming experiences.

Crypto gaming firm Argus Labs is looking to tackle these challenges with its flagship product World Engine, its CEO Scott Sunarto told Tech in Asia.

World Engine is a software development kit that provides game developers with the tools to create their own dedicated layer-2 blockchain networks on Ethereum. The solution gives game developers greater control and customization over their projects, including the user interface, game mechanics, and smart contract implementation.

Argus recently raised US$10 million in its seed round led by Haun Ventures. Investors including Gojek co-founder Kevin Aluwi as well as Robot Ventures, Anagram, Dispersion Capital, and Alchemy also participated in the round.

“We are actively expanding our team in Indonesia right now,” said Sunarto. “I’m personally excited to be accelerating Indonesia’s growth in the crypto industry.”

Scalability in games

“Building a fully on-chain game on the blockchain is really difficult,” shared Sunarto. “There are a lot of missing pieces that needed to be built to be able to support more games.”

Argus employs a sharding architecture as part of its World Engine infrastructure, the CEO said. Sharding is a technique that involves splitting a blockchain network into smaller partitions called shards, each capable of processing transactions and computations independently.

This setup helps World Engine with horizontal scalability. As the player base and usage of a game increase, the blockchain can expand by creating additional shards.

Each shard within World Engine is dedicated to a specific game or set of games, making sure that the resources and computational power are focused on delivering optimal performance for those games.
