Foxconn Technology Group, a Taiwan-based supplier of tech giant Apple, will invest around US$700 million to build a new plant in India, hinting at a possible shift of iPhone manufacturing out of China, Bloomberg reported.
The move comes as tensions between China and the US deepen and signals the risk of China losing some of its production capacity for consumer electronics to countries like India and Vietnam.
The 300-acre plant, set to be located near the airport in Bengaluru, will accommodate the production of iPhone parts and the assembly of Apple headsets. However, sources told Bloomberg that it’s unclear whether the Indian site represents added capacity or replaces some that was shifted outside China.
The plant in India will generate about 100,000 jobs, which is still far smaller than the headcount at Foxcoon’s China operations.
Foxconn began making iPhone 14 in India last year, while the Indian government aimed to boost financial incentives for some electronics manufacturers.
