Privacy-focused browser app launches in India

Wave, a mobile browser app that claims to deliver “full privacy,” announced it has chosen India as the launchpad of its entry into the global market.

Wave offers a privacy-focused browser that it says allows users to chat and consume content without worrying about personal tracking issues. It also has a personal section that stores web content and notes in a single place.

The platform has been in its beta phase for five months, during which the firm claims it has attracted 1 million users across India. To date, Wave has raised US$10 million from angel investors based in India and France.

“Users should be able to decide when their usage has to remain private, not only with their chat [conversations] but with their overall smartphone usage: the content they browse, the content they share,” said Wave CEO and founder Marc Miance.

The move comes as WhatsApp continues to face legal challenges in India over its updated data-sharing rules. According to its most recent announcement, the change allows the messaging app to share information about its users with its parent company Facebook, as well as with Instagram and Messenger.

Its rival apps Signal and Telegram have seen an increased number of users amid WhatsApp’s privacy issues.
