China’s ByteDance to pour billions to build Singapore team

ByteDance, the parent firm of short-video app TikTok, is planning to spend several billion dollars and add hundreds of jobs over the next three years in Singapore, according to a Bloomberg report that cited people familiar with the matter.

The move will give the Chinese tech powerhouse a better foothold in Asia as it pushes forward with its global expansion, the sources added.

Its plans include establishing a data center in Singapore, where ByteDance operates TikTok and enterprise software provider Lark.

ByteDance currently has 400 employees in the city-state, working on technology, sales and marketing. In addition, its jobs referral site indicates that there are over 200 openings in Singapore for positions ranging from payments and ecommerce to data privacy.

“Singapore is highly attractive to tech firms looking for a hub to address the Southeast Asian markets due to geographic proximity,” said Bloomberg Intelligence analyst Vey-Sern Ling. “The workforce is highly educated, tech-savvy and multilingual.”

ByteDance has also reportedly applied for a digital bank license in the city-state.

This comes as ByteDance is likely to miss the deadline that President Donald Trump gave for the sale of its US operations as new Chinese regulations complicated negotiations with bidders.
