6 annoying things about being an entrepreneur

When I interview entrepreneurs, most describe their job as tough but gratifying. You’re creating value from scratch. You define your fate – and that of others.

But from a recent podcast episode I learned there are plenty of moments when being an entrepreneur just sucks, or is, at best, ‘meh.’

Here are six situations the hosts describe as the annoying, dark side of entrepreneurship.

1. Constantly explaining what you do

Whether you’re at a social event with friends and family, or rubbing shoulders at a conference with fellow entrepreneurs, you’ll inevitably have to answer the question: “What do you do?”

Apparently, founders dread this.

How do you break down something technical to a person who doesn’t know much about it? How long can you gush about your totally rad idea before the eyes of the person you’re chatting with start glazing over?

You might find yourself using silly jargon to get it over with fast. Say you’re building a “know-how and synergy platform” – it’s guaranteed to make the other person stop asking questions.

Unfortunately, explaining what you do to someone who knows about your industry isn’t pleasant either. You don’t want to make it sound rehearsed, or worse – like a pitch. You’re struggling to find casual, unique ways to describe your business and end up resorting to silly jargon – again.

2. Firing someone

Having to fire someone is the most anxiety-inducing task in the life of an entrepreneur, the podcasters said. Lucky for you it doesn’t happen nearly as often as being asked to explain what you do.

You can find solace in telling yourself that going through this process defines who you are. Most people wouldn’t put themselves through the sleepless nights it takes to prepare for a difficult conversation like this. That’s why you’re an entrepreneur and they’re not.
