Gmail comes to Myanmar with support for Burmese language

Gmail comes to Myanmar

Google is today rolling out support for the Burmese language in Gmail. Users in Myanmar can now find an option for their language in Gmail’s settings pane.

Google’s Asia blog points out that Gmail users in Myanmar can find a choice of two virtual keyboards to help them type. It looks like this:

The local version of Gmail is still a work in progress, so Google is inviting people in Myanmar to contribute better translations where they see any awkward phrasing.

Gmail now speaks 74 languages.

This comes a few months after the search giant added Burmese into Google Translate. That’s also at an early stage of development which Google classifies as an alpha version.

Myanmar, which opened up to the outside world a few years ago, is seeing people rush to get online. But it’s still early days. Half of Myanmar’s mobile internet users came online during the past 12 months, but only 10 percent of the population have a mobile phone right now.
