In brief: Alibaba seeks out Singapore PhDs for new tech talent program

Alibaba on Monday launched the Alibaba Talent Program in Singapore, looking to arm postgraduate students with R&D skill sets through practical work experience on real-world projects.

The program, with support from Nanyang Technological University and the Singapore Economic Development Board, is open to Singapore citizens or permanent residents who graduated from a local university or one of a select group of top-ranked universities around the world.

PhD students who are selected to take part in the program will spend part of their studies at one or several of Alibaba’s campuses in Beijing, Hangzhou, and Singapore, where they’ll work on R&D projects in fields such as artificial intelligence, blockchain, quantum computing, and cybersecurity, among others.

Program participants will have their tuition fees paid for them and will receive a monthly stipend of S$5,000 (US$3,640), with top performers offered permanent jobs at Alibaba.

Interested students can apply to join the Alibaba Talent Program in Singapore until October 31, with the first intake in January next year.
