Alibaba fires manager amid sexual assault probe

“ Chinese e-commerce leader Alibaba on Monday said it has fired a manager accused of sexual assault and promised policies to prevent sexual harassment – action blasted by state media as coming only after the accuser went public.” reported Reuters.

Details:

  • In the victim’s recounting of events, which circulated on Weibo, she recalled that after consuming alcohol, she woke up with no clothes and no memory of what else happened. Hotel CCTV footage showed her boss entering the room several times during the night. The victim reported the incident to HR, asking for the boss to be fired, but nothing happened.
  • Alibaba earlier announced that the victim’s supervisor, her HR contact, and their direct management had been suspended, a person told Reuters.

Dive deeper:

  • Alibaba’s CEO Daniel Zhang has since responded to the situation on the company’s internal message board, saying that everyone at Alibaba, starting from him, “must empathize, reflect, and take action.”
  • The development follows another scandal that set Chinese social networks ablaze: Chinese pop star Kris Wu was accused of inducing students, some underaged, to have sexual relations with him.

Update: Details regarding the firing of a manager were added.
