Docomo issued an announcement today that the company has come to an agreement with Twitter to include features of the popular microblog on its smartphones and feature phones.
Twitter content will be integrated into search results on Docomo’s i-mode portal on feature phones, and in the Docomo Market for smartphones. This will include a new ‘Real-time Tweet’ service which is on the way sometime this year.
When I spoke to Docomo this afternoon, a representative told me that Twitter is an especially fitting service for mobile phones (Twitter, of course, has its origins in mobile SNS). The spokesperson explained that while “Twitter has a client application for smartphones already, they don’t have [one] for feature phones.” She added “We will launch a client application for feature phones sometimes this summer.”
According to information from comScore last June, Japan ranked in the top five nations for Twitter penetration at 16.8%, and this doesn’t even include mobile access! Japan clearly loves Twitter, and Docomo is wise to try to capitalize on this.
