Airwallex, a global payments and financial platform, has officially launched in Israel and appointed former Google executive Or Liban as the head of Israel and the Middle East.

Setting up shop in Israel is part of the firm’s broader plan for growth across Europe, the Middle East, and Africa region this year. Liban, who previously served as Google’s head of global partnerships, will oversee this expansion.

Tel Aviv was chosen as the company’s first regional office location due to Israel’s robust tech ecosystem and strong customer demand, Airwallex said in a statement.

The fintech firm serves local businesses such as Papaya Global and OurCrowd, as well as global companies like Shein and Qantas.

Valued at US$5.5 billion, Airwallex has processed more than US$50 billion in annualized transaction volume globally and plans to hire 500 employees from around the world.
