9gag’s new game is an old Touchten one

redhead redemption

Ah, 9gag – purveyor of procrastination and internet memes alike. In more news of Asia-based companies breaking new ground, Touchten Games has teamed up with 9gag to create the humor website’s first mobile game. It was released just a day before Christmas.

Titled Redhead Redemption, the gyroscope-based vertical shooter is actually a rehash of an existing Touchten game, Cute Kill. And yes, it also makes a pun on the popular triple-A zombie game, Red Dead Redemption. Cute Kill was first released in 2013 and features a girl running forward with a baby strapped to her back. This baby is responsible for inflicting murder and mayhem on the encroaching zombie horde.

While the infant in question was undoubtedly the star of Cute Kill, the tables have been turned in the 9gag version of the game. The redheaded sister who carries him is the titular character and caricatures of the duo are more obvious throughout the game.

9gag’s signature rage face memes also make an appearance, with a zombie altered to look like the troll rage face (he disappears too quick for us to get a screenshot, unfortunately), and other popular internet memes like Bad Luck Brian, Grumpy Cat, and Success Kid – albeit with captions that are more tooltips than jokes.

Apart from these little insertions of 9gag culture, Redhead Redemption is pretty much Cute Kill all over again, with the exception of a camera that now gives a wider view of what’s happening.

We’ll be reaching out to 9gag and Touchten Games for comment, and will update when they reply.
