60/40: How AI is changing the founder’s playbook

AI has made it much easier to build a startup. It has also made it much easier to build the wrong thing.

In this episode of 60/40, four-time founder Prashanth Ranganathan talks about how AI hasn’t changed the destination for founders, as product-market fit is still the goal. What has changed is almost everything underneath it: how founders raise capital, hire teams, validate ideas, and build products.

The biggest trap, he says, is mistaking speed for understanding.

With AI, founders can prototype in hours instead of months, iterate faster than ever before, and test dozens of ideas with minimal cost. But that same speed can create the illusion of progress. It’s easy to believe you’ve gone from 80% understanding of your customer to 95%, when in reality you’ve become distracted by what AI makes possible instead of staying focused on the problem you’re trying to solve.

AI can synthesize information, generate code, and accelerate execution. It still can’t observe a customer’s hesitation, notice what isn’t being said, or develop conviction about a problem worth solving. As execution becomes cheaper, judgment becomes more valuable.

This episode also discusses why founders may need less capital than ever before, whether billion-dollar companies could soon be built by teams of just four people, and why attitude may become a more valuable hiring signal than domain expertise.

The founder’s playbook isn’t disappearing, but it is changing. Those who thrive won’t be the ones who use AI most aggressively, but the ones who know when to ignore it, stay close to their customers, and use AI to accelerate insight rather than replace it.
