6 tips for dominating LoL's newest game mode, Ascension

If you’re a League of Legends player on one of Riot’s servers, you’ve probably already gotten in a couple games of Ascension, the game’s newest limited-time game mode. But if you really want to master the mode (and unlock those sweet icons) before time runs out, you can’t just pick a random champion and run around like it’s deathmatch. Here are some tips to be sure you’re the team that ends at the top of the scoreboard when time runs out.

1. Pay attention to team comp

Don’t lose the game in champion select! The mode only allows for blind pick, but you do get a few bans, and it’s often worthwhile to ban any of the highly-mobile, highly-powerful assassins your team isn’t likely to play (think Master Yi, Katarina, Akali, Fizz, etc.). In terms of what you pick, playing champions you’re comfortable with always helps, but high mobility champs can confer some map advantage since there’s no way of getting vision in this game mode. You will definitely need some damage (as mentioned, assassins work well), but having a tank and some CC isn’t a bad thing either. Finally, the narrow corridors of this Crystal Scar map can be used to your advantage to funnel enemies in a particular direction if you have a champion like Jarvan IV, Karthas, or Zyra that can create an obstacle of some kind.

2. Don’t ignore the relics

Ascension feels a lot like deathmatch, and it’s easy to start chasing or focusing on getting kills. But if you actually want to win, do the math: capturing a relic is three times as valuable as getting a kill. That means that you should almost always prioritize relics over kills, and it also means that you shouldn’t let the enemy team take relics uncontested.

3. Stick together

Between the three relics and the Ascended Xerath, teams are liable to get pulled apart. But if you stick together either as a whole team or as groups of 2 and 3, there’s a good chance you’ll be able to find easy picks as you run into enemy champions trying to go solo.

4. Don’t start fighting the Ascended Xerath unless you know it’s safe
