Report: TikTok to introduce new ecommerce tools in the US to take on Facebook

TikTok is planning an aggressive expansion into ecommerce in the US, where it will go head to head with Silicon Valley giant Facebook,” reported Financial Times, citing sources.

Details:

  • The Chinese short-video platform has informed investors about the company’s plans to introduce new features in 2021.
  • They include a tool that allows its most popular users to share links to products and earn a commission on sales.
  • The app will also introduce livestreamed shopping, a mobile phone version of television shopping where users can buy goods after seeing them exhibited by TikTok influencers.

Context:

  • The introduction of the new tools comes after TikTok teamed up with ecommerce platform Shopify to compete with Facebook.
  • Last year, Facebook added new tools on Instagram to provide users with a digital shopping channel on its main Facebook site, strengthening its ecommerce push.
