5 ways to not be a quitter in Dark Souls II

After seeing this post on Reddit I became insanely curious. Who gave up of Dark Souls II so quickly? Who does that? According to the people I asked, most of them. Nearly all my friends had played Demon’s Souls or Dark Souls but almost none of them had completed either. Almost everyone I knew was a Souls game quitter. Most of them for the same reasons. So here it is: whether you’re a Souls noob or someone who hasn’t played in a while, here are 5 ways to avoid being a Dark Souls II quitter.

It’s a marathon, not a sprint.

Dark Souls II isn’t like other action games. It’s not about rushing through hordes of enemies and massacring them in the dozens, this is something much deeper. Dark Souls II is tough and it takes time (and deaths) to improve. You won’t be a “natural” at it, and your Devil May Cry, Dante’s Inferno or Bayonetta’s button mashing skills won’t help you here.

Precious souls

Precious souls

Dark Souls II is something much more tactical and much deeper. Enemies will challenge you with unpredictable tactics and incredible ferocity. You will be forced to dodge, block, cast and slash your way through dozens of these things, each with the potential to kill you. And you will die. You will die and you will learn.

You will get faster, quicker and smarter. You will master dodging and the timing strikes and you will cut your way through them and end up victorious and alive. You will feel great because you did that, and that was tough. Every death will make that moment sweeter, because this time you’re alive.

Accept Death

Death, my friends, is inevitable, in life as it is in Dark Souls II. I know it’s tough, but you need to accept your own mortality. You are going to be crushed, stabbed, drowned, burnt and crushed to death. You are going to die both painfully and quickly in all kinds of surprising ways but the one thing you can be certain of is that you are going to die. Often.

But when Dark Souls II gives you death, just resurrect as a Hollow (Hollow is Souls for zombie). Yeah, you are going to be annoyed when it happens, but don’t let it get you down. Just take a deep breathe and stay calm and if you’re too stuck to move on, check points three and four.

Accept Help

One thing about the Souls community is that they are committed. Within a few days of launch, wikis were beginning to fill up. Information was being shared and tests were being conducted. All through the wonderful and beautiful internet. So get on there, watch the tutorials of the guys who know what they are doing. Check out the experiments on Youtube to see what works better to heal that ailment or how to murder this particular demonic entity.
