5 Must-Read Tech Stories in China This Week

Hello, Olympics fans! Did you know that tech things continued to happen in China this week? It’s true, they did. And some of them didn’t have anything to do with the Olympics either. Intrigued? Read on!

1. Weibo Beats Twitter With 119 Million London Olympics Opening Ceremony Tweets

OK, admittedly we’re off to an Olympics-y start, but I promise this is the only one. And it’s a big one. China’s Sina Weibo saw more discussion of the London Opening Ceremonies than Twitter did, despite the fact that it has significantly fewer users. In the words of Kanye West: “Dat shit cray.”

2. Baidu and Sina Partner Up for Mobile Search, Cloud Computing, and More?

Baidu and Sina have teamed up before, but it’s always big news when China’s great internet behemoths come together. Plus it allows us to make ridiculous photoshops of kissing bears. Kissing bears! You know you want to click it.

3. ChinaJoy 2012: Big Numbers, But is This Show About Games or Girls?

China’s biggest gaming convention wrapped this week amid controversy about whether the show was even still about games or whether the pretty models doing promotion had taken over the show.

4. 10 Alternative Android App Stores From China

Google Play not doing it for you? This week we broke down the best options for alternative app stores. There are plenty of options, but only ten made the most recent version of our list!

5. Twitter Should Shut Up and Copy Sina Weibo

In this post, I blathered on about Twitter and how it ought to copy Sina Weibo. I might seem arrogant of me to put this post here — and it is — but know that I’m only doing it because a couple days later an excellent post about Bill Bishop (aka @niubi) came out on PandoDaily in which he said the same thing. So if you won’t listen to me, Twitter, listen to Bill. He’s probably one of your biggest users and (unlike me) he definitely knows what he’s talking about!
