Employees face risks when joining a startup, and one of the most common is the risk of losing a job too soon. How should a startup employee deal with this kind of uncertainty?

A TIA reader named Abhi is having this dilemma:

In the startup community, we all love and embrace the fear and uncertainty of early-stage businesses. But as the startup grows, one big cause of a lot of stress is the fear of losing your job or loss of income for many unimaginable reasons.

As the startup moves into the growth phase, people lose jobs more than ever, but not because of their own failures. Sometimes its about the arrival of a new boss, organizational restructuring, or just a tough time in the business (especially in startups with growing pains).

For some functions (like Scala developers) it’s easy to move on, but for others, it’s hard to find a new job.
