Xiaomi has sold 18.5m of its Mi Band fitness wearable

Xiaomi's new Mi Band Pulse gets my heart racing - REVIEW

The Mi Band Pulse is the newest version of Xiaomi’s fitness wearable.

Chinese gadget maker Xiaomi said today that it has sold 18.5 million Mi Bands since the fitness wearable launched August 2014.

The Mi Band comes in two versions – one with and one without a heart rate tracker. They cost US$15 and US$10.50, respectively, making them much cheaper alternatives to the likes of Fitbit or Jawbone. Those wearables tend to start at around US$80.

Fitbit, the world’s biggest wearables maker, sold about 20 million of its devices in 2015.

Xiaomi’s smart bracelet is for sale in mainland China and a few of Xiaomi’s overseas markets, such as India and Indonesia. It’s not available in North America or Europe.

Xiaomi’s announcement came at an event in Beijing in which Xiaomi, which is China’s top-selling smartphone brand, focused on other gizmos aside from phones. The startup this afternoon revealed it has established a sub-brand for its smart home gadgets and other appliances called “Mi Ecosystem” in English. The Chinese name, Mi Jia, contains the character for “home,” giving a better clue of what it stands for than the English moniker.

Converted from Chinese yuan. Rate: US$1 = RMB 6.51.
