Google to Open an Office in Indonesia This Year

Speaking to the vice president of Indonesia, Boediono, Eric Schmidt shared Google plan’s to open an office in Indonesia before the end of this year. Schmidt, Google’s Executive Chairman, is visiting Bali for the Global Entrepreneurship Program Indonesia and the Regional Entrepreneurship Summit at the Grand Hyatt Bali together with Hillary Clinton.

As quoted in this article by Tekno Kompas, Yopie Hidayat, a spokesperson for the vice president, explained that Google wants to expand their business in Indonesia through expanding the platform that connects small and medium enterprises (SMEs) to buyers in foreign countries. Google already did this in China, which brought a significant increase in advertising sales.

Google is discussing with the Ministry of Communication and Information to prepare a local office and to start expanding their business here. They want to make an MoU with Indonesia Government as the foundation of the expansion.

Update: From a source in the Ministry of Telecommunication, there is no MoU just yet, as Schmidt was rushing from the vice president’s office and thus Google’s plan for Indonesia is still very open. The company is still considering about setting up an office in Indonesia. They are still prefer to be based in Singapore, but putting a marketing representative in Indonesia would be a good move.

Given the country’s potential, surely it’s about time for the search giant to open an office here. Even though it might not be completely necessary for them (since they already have one an hour and half away in Singapore), their presence would send a buzz through the nation, especially the tech industry.
