Tokopedia says it hit the 1 million merchants mark

William Tanuwijaya, CEO of Tokopedia.
Indonesian online marketplace Tokopedia had its seventh anniversary yesterday – on the same day Indonesia celebrates its independence.
The ecommerce company revealed some figures. It’s not a public company yet, so we have to go with what it tells us.

The total number of products sold on the platform rose to 16.5 million a month this year.
The number of sellers shot up to 1 million from the previously reported figure of 300,000.
In a league with Lazada
Co-founder and CEO William Tanuwijaya said in a statement that the the total value of items purchased on the platform is now “in the trillions of rupiah” per month. For reference: five trillion Indonesian rupiah would equal roughly US$380 million.
Back-of-napkin calculations like these are obviously to be taken with a generous serving of salt, but for the sake of comparison: Lazada’s GMV (gross merchandize volume, another way of saying the total value of products bought) was just above US$1 billion in 2015. And that’s for all of Southeast Asia. With a GMV hitting the hundreds of millions in USD per month, Tokopedia plays in one league with Lazada.
Mobile shopping leads
William also pointed out that Tokopedia is the most popular homegrown site in Indonesia, with a total of 1.3 billion page views per month.
According to Similarweb, Tokopedia has more monthly visitors in Indonesia than Twitter and Wikipedia. Only Facebook, Google, and other global giants rank better.
Tokopedia also reports a significant shift in shopping behavior.
Two years ago, 56 percent of users accessed Tokopedia from mobile devices and mobile transactions were only at 29 percent. Now, however, 80 percent of visits come from mobile and mobile transactions make up 74 percent.
Tokopedia’s main local rival, Bukalapak, also today reported hitting the 1 million merchants mark but didn’t share other figures in its release.
