BillBaba.com Helps India Manage Its Bill Payments

bill-baba

There are many financial tools available online that you can use to manage your personal finances. For many Mint.com is a great solution, but it’s not available in many countries outside the US, including India. And while it’s not on par with the services offered from Mint, a new Indian service called BillBaba.com hopes it can help with bill payments for many in the country.

BillBaba primarily serves as a reminder system and personal finance analysis system. You can use it to set simple alerts for bill payments, with options to have alerts sent via email, SMS, or even through Facebook. Technically users outside India can use the service as well, but the SMS alert function will only work inside the country.

Bill Baba’s Amit Saxena tells Penn Olson why there’s a need in India for such a service:

An average Indian consumer has to pay around five bills each month and the effort and time wasted in offline payments is tremendous. Even the reminder system (for different providers) is not intact, and missing a bill payment is not a rare event. Other than that there are no financial tools for the common man which can organize things in a better manner, record spending habits and inculcate the habit of saving.

One of my favorite things about the service is that it generates informative spending analysis charts though Google Charts integration. So once you have been using the service for a while, you can look back and see in what categories you are spending the most, or how your spending has changed over time.

So far BillBaba has not been extensively marketed, but I’m told that traffic has been increasing steadily over the past 20 days. Amit says that the next step for the service is to take on online bill payments.
