In a bid to help rural India, a group of MBA students at McGill have joined forces to make a difference.
A total of 29 students will be traveling to 5 cities in India to raise $10,000 for the Nanhi Kali foundation. The fund will be used to help impoverished girls in India. $10,000 will allow 100 girls to attend school for a year.
As part of their 10-day trip to India on 18 Feb, the students have chosen to employ social media to trigger word-of-mouth.
The students will tweet their experience while on the move. Facebook & blog will be used to post highlights of their experience.
Talking about the initiative, Melanie Walsh, one of the organizers of the campaign told Montreal Gazette, “We have a website that we’ll be using to post daily updates about our trips. We’ll be taking videos, photos, and use blogs and Twitter to keep everyone updated so they can read about the trip.”
It would be ideal if the students were able to meet their $10,000 goal. Even if it doesn’t, this trip will still be a memorable experience for many, especially on the use of social media for social cause.
“It’s an opportunity to use social media and learn about it, but also to do something very useful with it,” said Karl Moore, the associate professor who organized the trip.
Here is a summary on how the awareness and fund raising will take place in 9 steps:
