In brief: Chinese smartphone makers dominate Indian market, says report
- Chinese brands led by Xiaomi controlled a record 66% of the Indian smartphone market in the first quarter of 2019, according to Reuters, citing a report by Hong-Kong based Counterpoint Research.
- The report found that volumes rose 20% on the back of popularity for brands like Vivo, RealMe, and Oppo. Affordable pricing and features like selfie cameras and big screens have helped boost demand.
- Xiaomiβs shipments to India β the worldβs fastest-growing smartphone market β fell by 2%, but the Beijing-based company was still the biggest brand in the country, followed by Samsung.
- Heavy usage of video-streaming apps like Netflix and social messaging platforms like Facebook and WhatsApp have increased data consumption in India, and βusers are upgrading their phones faster compared to other regions,β a Counterpoint executive said.
