500 Startups’ Dave McClure
500 Startups’ frontman Dave McClure just posted a slideshow detailing the 10 main challenges faced by emerging market startup ecosystems. They’re the slides that accompany a talk he did at StartupIstanbul.
It’s worth seeing the full thing (embedded below) as McClure includes supporting details, tips to improve the situation, as well as evidence that some of the problems are going away. First, here’s a summary of the 10 main issues:
- There aren’t many investors. Most of them are evil or stupid.
- There aren’t many entrepreneurs. Most of them are clueless.
- There aren’t many customers. Most of them don’t pay.
- Startups don’t have traction. And no idea how to get it.
- There aren’t many exits. Most of them are small.
- Investing in real estate is better than investing in startups.
- Most accelerators suck, And they’re going to die. Soon.
- Employees don’t understand equity. Founders don’t give it to them,
- Most startups never go global. Most that try will fail.
- Most founders and investors don’t think they’re as good as Silicon Valley.
