Chang Sau Sheong, a prominent engineer in the Singapore scene, has taken up an unusual post. He has left PayPal after a three-year stint to join Singapore Power, a government-linked corporation that runs the country’s electrical and gas supply.
Sau Sheong will assume the post of managing director of digital technology, and he will take charge of “building new and innovative digital products” for the company, according to his LinkedIn profile.
He was formerly the director of global consumer engineering at PayPal, where he led engineers to build consumer apps. He has started his own tech companies, and did stints at HP, Garena, and Yahoo in various engineering capacities.
The news, however, may not be so surprising considering the Singapore government has been intensifying efforts to modernize itself and the economy.
It now has a dedicated agency tasked with digitizing government services. Another previously old-fashioned, government-linked corporation, SingPost, is in the midst of a transformation from a postage carrier to an ecommerce logistics powerhouse.
