Meta to keep third-party fact-checkers outside the US

Meta Platforms will continue using third-party fact-checkers outside the US for now, according to Nicola Mendelsohn, Meta’s head of global business.

This decision follows the company’s recent shift to a community notes system in the US due to concerns over errors and alleged censorship in the previous system.

Mendelsohn clarified that Meta will monitor the new US system before considering similar changes in other regions.

The decision to maintain external fact-checking outside the US may relate to stricter legal requirements in other jurisdictions. For example, the European Union’s Digital Services Act imposes penalties for misinformation.
