Meta launches global campaign to curb holiday season scams
Meta has announced a global campaign to increase scam awareness during the holiday shopping season spanning Facebook Marketplace, WhatsApp, and Instagram.
Meta identified scams involving fake holiday coupons and fraudulent gift offers. These scams often direct victims to deceptive websites through platforms like Telegram and Pinterest.
New safety features have been added this year.
WhatsApp now delivers context cards when users receive messages from unknown sources. Instagram alerts users to suspicious accounts requesting to follow them, while Facebook Marketplace flags messages linked to known scam patterns.
Meta has also ramped up actions against phishing domains and scam-related accounts.
Over two million accounts tied to scams from countries including Cambodia, Myanmar, and the Philippines have been removed in 2024. In India, partnerships with government agencies are focusing on raising awareness about cyber fraud.
