Grab has integrated OpenAI’s GPT-4o with vision fine-tuning to improve mapmaking accuracy and efficiency for GrabMaps, a service that supports all of their operations in Southeast Asia.

The enhancements include better localization of traffic signs and lane divider counting, resulting in a decrease in manual mapping efforts.

To facilitate these improvements, Grab employed its network of motorbike riders and pedestrians equipped with 360-degree cameras to collect millions of street-level images.

Initial experiments used 100 sample cases. This led to an increase in GPT-4o’s accuracy from 67% to 80% after two rounds of fine-tuning.
