Zomato’s spending spree continues with the acquisition of Mekanist in Turkey

Zomato is at it again. A couple of weeks after entering the US market with the acquisition of Urbanspoon, the Indian company today acquired Turkey’s restaurant discovery portal, Mekanist, for an undisclosed amount.

Zomato will increase its coverage of restaurants from 27,500 to more than 50,000 restaurants across Turkey, according to the Economic Times. This is the seventh acquisition by Zomato in the last six months.

“Mekanist is one of the first and most successful tech startups to emerge from the Turkish startup ecosystem, and we’re excited about them becoming a part of Zomato,” said Deepinder Goyal, founder and CEO of Zomato.

The two teams will work to integrate Mekanist’s traffic and restaurant-related content to Zomato. The integrated product between the two companies is expected to rolled out over the next few months, and will be available to users and business owners in both Turkish and English. Zomato entered Turkey in November 2013.

Zomato is going global at a rapid pace with recent acquisitions of restaurant search players in Italy, Poland, the Czech Republic, New Zealand, and Slovakia and has increased its presence to 22 countries.

The company has raised around US$113 million over multiple rounds of funding from investors including Vy Capital, Info Edge, and Sequoia Capital.
