Singtel partners with Nvidia, others for AI initiatives

Singtel is upping its game in the AI space by introducing a new data center brand focused on the burgeoning industry.

Called Nxera, the platform aims to support AI development in Singapore and other parts of Southeast Asia with ecosystem partners – including Nvidia and Sembcorp – across AI, renewable energy, sustainable technologies, and talent development.

With Nvidia, Nxera will give companies access to the computing giant’s GPU clusters hosted on Nxera’s AI platform, as part of their support for Singapore’s updated National AI Strategy 2.0. Customers can use Singtel’s fixed broadband, submarine cable, and 5G networks to operate their AI workloads in a multinetwork and multicloud environment.

Other partners include Sembcorp, Gulf Energy, and Medco Power Indonesia, with whom Nxera is working to achieve operational net-zero emissions by 2028. Nxera will use these partners’ renewable energy sources to power its regional data centers.

In addition, Nxera is teaming up with five Singapore institutes of higher learning for the Regional Sustainable Data Center Academy. The academy trains students for the data center industry, and plans to expand to Thailand and Indonesia in the next phase.

Nxera’s launch comes months after Singtel divested 20% of its data center business to private equity giant KKR for US$806 million. The deal, which valued Singtel’s regional data center business at around US$4 billion, lets the telco access KKR’s expertise in expanding the unit across Southeast Asia.

Currently, Nxera is developing three AI data center projects in Singapore, Indonesia, and Thailand.
