Youku Original was a project introduced last April as an effort to feature original content on Youku, China’s popular Internet video site. The effort was rewarded as Youku was named one of the most valuable new media platforms at the Shanghai International Film Festival.
Tasting success, Youku will stay committed to producing original content. Two more original films are already in the pipeline including “One Step Away,” a series of six short films featuring Internet opinion leaders discussing what “happiness” means in China today. No further details were revealed but we will be keeping a close watch on this film (it seems really interesting).
The second original film “Travel With Me,” will feature an online reality travel show about Taiwan. Filming will begin next month and Youku is currently busy sorting out applications with nearly 1,500 users applied to be considered for the program.
“We see Youku Original as a way of building a full-fledged creative ecosystem,” said Frank Ming Wei, Youku’s senior vice president of operations in a statement.
“Our success over the past year tells us that Youku Original can serve as a platform for young creatives and established talents alike. Moving forward, Youku Original will continue to be more closely integrated with the entire value chain, encompassing the production, distribution, and monetization of original content.”
