But using paper maps and asking for directions in foreign languages shouldn’t be the way you travel these days. Here’s the list of five apps tourists should have on their iOS devices while traveling in Thailand.
1. Visit Thailand
This app is officially published by the Tourism Authority of Thailand. The app provides beautiful images of the country while offering tips on where to find shopping, nightlife, sightseeing spots, etc. What makes this app superb is the breathtaking photos from around the country; the app can show you a sneak-peek of where you’re going before you visit.
2. Thailand Travel Guide
This app offers a complete travel guide for over 50 main tourist cities in Thailand such as Bangkok, Phuket, and Chiangmai. The guide includes offline maps, suggested restaurants, nearby hotels, and all sort of information that tourists may need.
3. BangkokGate
Bangkok is known for having some of the world’s worst traffic jams. It’s highly recommended you get around Bangkok using public transportation such as the sky trains (BTS) or the subway (MRT). But not knowing the city well, getting around that way can be tricky too. The BangkokGate app helps solve that problem. The app was designed to help you find an easy route to where you want to go for each station, as well as an offline map of how the whole transit system’s connected.
Knowing Sawasdee (hello) and Kobkun (thank you) is not enough to get you around Thailand easily. This app helps you pull up easy words to show to taxi drivers, local people, or restaurant waitresses when you need something and they don’t actually speak anything else besides Thai. You can use this app to speak out loud for you or you can learn the phonetic pronunciation to say the same thing next time. Translation apps always come in handy when you travel to countries where English is not the first language.
5. Wongnai
Thailand is known for its famous food, and “When in Rome, do as the Romans do” applies to food, too. When in Thailand, eat like the locals do, using Wongnai. You use the app the find restaurants near you, read the reviews, see if your friends have been there. Although, most of the reviews are in Thai, the stars will give you enough of an idea of whether you should set foot into the place or not.
With these five apps, tourists should be almost ready enough to explore Thailand. Of course, it’s also important to note that in Thailand, in case of any emergency (knock on wood), you call 191, not 911.
